Product Description USDA Organic. The original oatmeal or porridge of ancient Scotland. Oatmeal originated in Scotland centuries ago and was different from our modern rolled oats. A coarse meal was produced by slowly grinding the kernel between two large millstones. Bob's Red Mill Scottish Oatmeal is produced in the same old-fashioned way and contains all the health-giving nutrients of the best quality oats from which it was ground - the germ, the oil and the fiber. Certified Organic by QAI. You can see our quality.

Scots know how to blow their oats to bits November 16, 2008 D. R. Anderson (Eastern Washington, USA) 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
These are a great whole grain for healthy eating, and they taste great too. My wife likes them with butter and salt but I like 'em sweet with [whatever]. Usually just brown sugar but you could be use a more healthy sweetener or some berries. I find these oats more pleasing than "Irish steel-cut" styles where the whole oat is just cut in two. These oats are like blasted to bits with a bomb.. ok I think stone ground.. but I like to exaggerate that angry Scots blew them to bits. We subscribed to this product, we like it so well. Recommendations: Buy, Eat.
CAUTION: Possibly contains gluten! December 1, 2008 Alan Miller (Schaumburg, IL) 25 out of 31 found this review helpful
All of the Bob's Red Mill products are great, but it's worth noting that while this shows up on a gluten-free search on Amazon the BRM company makes *no* claim that this product is gluten-free and in fact it probably isn't.
They have two facilities, one of which processes only products without wheat or gluten. If this was processed there, it would say that it was gluten-free (as their gluten-free rolled oats do); since it doesn't say so it's almost certain that it's processed on the same equipment that they use for wheat products so there can easily be cross-contamination.
Update: Bob's Red Mill has two different types of labels for their Gluten-Free products. One has "Gluten Free" in large print across the entire top of the label; it seems to be used mostly for their mixes (e.g. chocolate cake). The other GF label is used on their products that you wouldn't expect to contain gluten anyway such as bean flours. That one is a picture of wheat with a *RED* circle-and-slash about 3/4 of the way down the left side of the front label. They also have a *GREEN* logo that appears in the same place on some labels, that indicates organic but does *NOT* mean gluten-free - it's even used on some their wheat flours.
So delicious! January 18, 2009 Sharon Garner (Elk, CA USA) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
This oatmeal has more flavor than any other oatmeal I've ever tried. It has a wonderful natural sweetness and a slightly chewy texture. It is full of fiber and really needs nothing added to enjoy it's simple "deliciousness"!
I highly recommend this product as well as Bob's Red Mill 5 Grain cereal. Outstanding products.
My favorite oatmeal July 8, 2009 SunnyBeachLife (Florida) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I don't cook my Scottish oatmeal but stir it into a bowl of unsweetened yogurt, agave syrup, chopped almonds and a spoonful of ground flax seed. It makes for a wonderfully healthy, high protein, high fiber breakfast which keeps me full for hours and hours and full of energy.
My father eats raw oatmeal daily (he's now 93 and still rides a stationary bike fast and steady for an hour a day!) and and I tend to not cook things either, especially oats or veggies. Raw is where it's at..as much as possible anyway. Cooking takes some of the vitamins and fiber out. Delicious and highly recommend!

My husband loves oatcakes, but we cannot purchase them easily in the US, so I make them for him. Of all the oatmeals out there, this is the very best - the only one - that makes oatcakes that have authentic taste and texture. It's a wonderful product. Thank you, Bob's Red Mill.
